Miami, Florida — ICSI and Laser-Assisted Hatching

In addition to beginning fertility treatments and in vitro fertilization (IVF), Palmetto Fertility Center offers specialized treatments such as ICSI. At our Miami, Florida center, we perform ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to help couples with male factor infertility. ISCI is a micromanipulation technique in which a single sperm is injected into each mature egg.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

At our Miami, Florida center, our professionals begin ICSI by specially preparing both the sperm and the egg; then, the egg is injected with a single sperm using a microscopic needle. This technique allows couples to achieve fertilization and pregnancy when the male partner produces low-quality, low-count sperm.

Testicular / Epididymal Sperm Aspiration

Some men suffer a blockage or other abnormality that prevents the passage of sperm through ejaculation. A minor surgical procedure can be performed in which sperm is retrieved from the epididymis or directly from the testicle. This sperm is then injected into mature eggs obtained through IVF (in vitro fertilization). Sperm from testicular/epididymal sperm aspiration can be successfully cryopreserved (frozen) for future use.

Laser-Assisted Hatching

Unlike other fertility programs that do mechanical assisted hatching, the Palmetto Fertility Center is one of the few programs in Florida to use a laser to perform assisted hatching.

For the first six days of existence, embryos remain within a hard, shell-like structure called the zona pellucida. Assisted hatching is a micromanipulation technique in which a small opening is gently made with a laser in the zona pellucida of three-day-old embryos. This technique may be useful for women who have been unsuccessful with IVF in the past, or in older age groups.
